Up and Over 10K Trail Race 2017 | Taos Ski Valley

Taos Ski Valley Up and Over 10K Trail RaceMy race recap post is long overdue!  This is the trail race I participated in at the end of our summer stay in Taos.  If you follow me on instagram, you might recall that I posted a lot about it!  This course is in Taos Ski Valley, starting and finishing at the base of Chairlift 4, and offers an extensive steep uphill climb and a quick descent to the finish line….

As I flipped through my summer photos I decided I still wanted to share my experience, to give you the scoop…and, just in case you decide you want to train for it next summer!  I would love to have more friends experience it with me.  It’s incredible!

Stay the entire weekend and enjoy Taos and Taos Ski Valley during the beautiful summer season.  This year, our family stayed in the ski valley at The Blake all weekend and it was perfect!  (Read more about what else we did during our stay here and here.)  The date has already been set for next year’s race (August 4th, 2018).  I’m planning to make it my third year in a row…

One thing that has made this race so special to me is training and running it with my brother, Robert.  We don’t actually run it together because he’s much faster than me!  But, its fun to have the same goal to work towards all summer and encourage each other!

Here are the details:

The Taos Ski Valley Up And Over 10K starts at approx 9,200 ft elevation with a 2,612 ft climb, reaching 11,819 feet before the descent.  Last year I finished in 1 hour, 49 minutes (read last year’s recap here).  This year, I finished 10 minutes faster at 1 hour, 39 minutes, reaching my goal of beating my first year’s time.  Woohooo!

It’s an intense challenge but offers the most gorgeous mountain views and gives me an excuse to go hiking as much as I can prior to the race to train!  Not that I needed an excuse…hiking is one of my favorite things to do!
