What is Ranch Water and How to Make It

Ranch Water Margarita with Topo Chico, Holly and Martin Zhori Bar CartHappy Friday, friends!  And, Happy National Margarita Day!  In honor of this holiday (who knew!?) I wanted to share our favorite margarita alternative, Ranch Water!

It doesn’t technically qualify as a margarita, but it’s what we make or order as a substitute for the sugar loaded versions most places serve.  It’s simple, refreshing, crisp and I don’t miss the extra sugar one bit…it’s become my go-to when I decide to have a drink!

Ryan and I have both taken a liking to it and have enjoyed experimenting with different types of tequila.  Our favorites are Casa Amigos, Codigo, and Fortaleza, all of which are 100% agave.  For this drink we like blanco.  Some say there are health benefits to drinking tequila but I don’t know if I’d take it that far.  Through my Whole30 resets/reintroductions, I’ve learned sugary beverages don’t sit well with me.  Not worth it!  I can enjoy one or two of these and not feel any negative effects the next day.

Our Favorite Ranch Water

Ingredients:

  • 1 oz 100% agave tequila
  • Topo Chico
  • Fresh lime juice/lime slices to garnish
  • (optional) Kosher salt, to rim your glass

Instructions:

If you want a salt rimmed glass, run a lime wedge over the rim and dip in a shallow dish of kosher salt before you begin…try adding tajin too, for spiciness!

  • Fill a glass with ice
  • Add 1 – 2 oz tequila
  • Squeeze/add fresh lime juice to your liking (I usually use the juice of half a lime)
  • Top with Topo Chico
  • Stir and enjoy!
  • You can use any size glass you’d like, and use more or less topo to suit your taste.  I like to top mine off with more as I go, telling myself I’m hydrating, ha!

If you’re looking for more traditional margarita ideas using fresh ingredients, check out my friend Alicia’s recipe at The Lush List for her Four Citrus Margarita and others linked in her post.  And, this Marfa Ranch Water recipe from Martha Stewart featuring a spicy salted rim is another great find…as is this bar cart from Holly and Martin!

Thanks for stopping by!  Have a wonderful weekend…cheers!  xx
