Weekend Getaway Guide: What to Do in Lubbock, TX

As a proud Texas Tech family, we’ve gotten to know Lubbock pretty well! Over the past four years, since our daughter Marisa has been attending school there, we’ve visited for move-ins/outs, football games, parents weekends, and more. This West Texas gem has definitely grown on us! We’ve found some favorite spots, but we also love discovering new ones with every visit.

A few years ago, as we were getting ready to move her into her dorm freshman year, I asked on Instagram for Lubbock recommendations. I started a list with everyone’s suggestions, and I’ve continued adding to it since! Today, I’m excited to share our family’s go-to spots in Lubbock, TX with you!

Our overall top pick! We love the western chic vibe and cozy rooms (comfy beds and smeg refrigerators in each!).

There’s an open courtyard complete with sitting areas and fireplaces. It also features The Midnight Shift restaurant/bar, live music on the weekend, corn hole, and a great pool! We also love the fitness center here, for a quick workout.

Tip: get a courtyard room at Cotton Court for great views of the social scene and sunsets!

The Overton is the most convenient lodging option for gameday! The campus and stadium are right across the street making for an easy commute on busy weekends.

They also have a great fitness center and restaurant / buffet option.

Lubbock also has a fun selection of Air BNBs with local flair! We found this Ranch House rental and snagged it for graduation weekend!

I’ve also had my eye on these fun rentals: Buddy Holly Loft and City Service Station.

Where to Eat in Lubbock, TX

On busy weekends, finding a table can be tricky, but don’t worry—Lubbock, aka The Hub City, has no shortage of great places to eat! Whether you’re craving a cozy cafe, a trendy spot for brunch, or a classic comfort foods, there’s something for everyone.

Monomyth Coffee: The relaxed atmosphere of this coffee shop with plenty of seating makes it a perfect place to enjoy a cup of coffee, work, or catch up with friends.

Gold Stripe Coffee Roasters: Another local favorite for your morning brew, with two convenient locations to choose from!

Chicken Run: Chicken Run serves breakfast, brunch, and lunch with a menu packed with comforting favorites like omelettes, skillets, benedicts, waffles, and more. I love their avocado toast and the gluten free pancakes are Andrew’s favorite!

Ninety Two Bakery and Cafe: The perfect place for a quick breakfast or lunch. Think yummy pastries, coffees, soups, and salads!

Fine Dining

Las Brisas Steakhouse: Las Brisas serves up tender steaks and classic sides in a cozy, upscale atmosphere—perfect for a special dinner.

La Sirena: Their menu changes seasonally, so there’s always something new and delicious to try! Don’t miss the delicious quail empanadas!

La Diosa Cellars: We stumbled upon this Spanish tapas restaurant on our first visit to Lubbock and fell in love with the ambiance and delicious food! The abondigas (meatballs) and lamb pops are among our favoite things to order. They have live music on the weekends and a great wine list.

Stella’s Italian: A must-visit for authentic Italian dishes and a cozy vibe. Tucked behind Stella’s is Manhatt9n, a cool speakeasy that requires a secret password to get in (Shh… it’s posted every week on their social media!).

Neighborhood F&B: With great comfort food and craft cocktails, this is the perfect spot to hang out with friends.

Evie Maes BBQ: The laid-back, welcoming atmosphere makes this a must-visit spot for BBQ lovers!

Dirk’s Chicken: This one is a cozy neighborhood gem! Dirk’s offers delicious, hearty comfort food like fried chicken, shrimp and greats, and gulf oysters.

Fast Casual

Moto Medi: Think Qdoba or Chipotle style bowls, but for yummy Mediterranean food instead! Perfect for a quick, casual meal. And don’t miss their free soft serve with Turkish coffee syrup for dessert!

Velvet Taco: Whenever we’re craving a taco fix, Velvet Taco is our go-to! But we’re big fans of Torchy’s tacos too—both are definitely worth a visit and have great margaritas/ranch waters…

Let’s just say I’ve been to a variety of bars during my stays in Lubbock. From college dive bars, to outdoor venues, to a cool speak easys/lounges, there is something for everyone!

Where to Shop in Lubbock, TX

Lubbock has several great boutiques and stores we love to pop into when we’re in town! Coming from Dallas, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the variety of shopping available!

Drest by Scott Malouf: One of my favorite shops to visit when we’re in town. You’ll find a great mix of high end dresses, designer denim, and a unique shoe selection (Golden Goose, and Aquazurra included)! And, they have a variety of gorgeous fine jewelry and accessories! They also carry fine men’s clothing, which comes in handy when shopping for something special for the guys.

Chrome: This boutique has a little bit of everything clothing and shoe-wise, and it’s always a treat to stroll through and check out their newest finds and displays! You’ll even find some beautiful vintage Chanel handbags. They have the best fragrance and candle selection in town (Bond No. 9 and more great brands) and home decor/gifts.

Red Raider Outfitters: A local favorite for ALL things Texas Tech! Really, they have everything from clothing, home decor, car decor, fan gear for kids/pets, and even Christmas decor. This is the spot to grab your game day gear and show off your school spirit.

hemline: My daughter loves shopping at this boutique! Tons of cute, trendy things to choose from. A great spot to go shopping for a last minute dress or party outfit.

Julian Gold: This department store is another favorite for luxury and designer fashion! They have a great shoe section, along with a curated cosmetics counter. And- Sephora and lululemon are in the same shopping center…

Don’t forget to wear your red and black and join in on the famous “Guns Up” salute for some true Texas Tech spirit!

The Range in Lubbock TX

The Range: A fun, laid-back driving range where you can enjoy wood-fired pizza, drinks, and music while you hit a bucket of balls. It’s a great spot to unwind with friends or family. Plus, since it’s a lighted range, you can enjoy it at night!

Farmers Market: Head to the Downtown Farmer’s Market for fresh, local produce, handmade goods, and a lively atmosphere. It’s the perfect way to support local vendors and get a feel for the Lubbock community.
