TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT FITNESS CLASS FOR YOU!

photo-11If you are new to working out, you may wonder, “How can I find the group fitness classes that are right for me?”  Or if you are a veteran exerciser, you may ask, “What can I do to shake up my routine to see results?”

Well…you are in luck, because I had the pleasure of interviewing Julie Valenti, the Area Group Fitness Manager for Equinox in Chicago, and I asked her these questions.

Today I am sharing her tips on finding the right classes for you, and creating a well-rounded fitness routine…

Mixing it up is KEY!

Too often, people find only one class format they like and stick with it.  It is important to include strength, cardio, and regeneration in your routine.  Included in regeneration are rest, recovery, sleep, and nutrition.  It is all tied together!  And, one of the many benefits of working out in a group setting is the sense of community that is cultivated.  Challenge yourself to try new workouts and make some fitness-minded friends!

Four Questions to Consider When Building a Well-Rounded Fitness Routine:

Is it EFFICIENT?

You don’t have to workout for 90 minutes!  Its all about working out smarter, not harder.  Choose a class that includes strength training and cardio, such as Elimin8tor, which is an efficient workout in 45 minutes.

Is it EFFECTIVE?

Are you doing the same class all the time, or are you getting out of your comfort zone and trying new things?  As long as you are not hurting yourself, it is okay to feel uncomfortable at times during a workout, whether it is strength training or yoga!

Is it FUN?

You have to find something you LIKE or even better, LOVE to do for exercise.  There has to be some level of enjoyment, or you won’t return.  For example, if you absolutely hate running, don’t force yourself to take a running class.  Maybe try cycling or vinyasa yoga instead!  Be open to trying new workouts.  And, find ways to make fitness fun!  Find an instructor whose teaching style you like and take new class they are teaching, or invite your spouse or a friend to join you for a workout.

Is it DO-ABLE?

It has to be do-able for your life if it is going to be part of your routine.  Find the best time for you, and then add it to your schedule, just like you would any other appointment.

  1. I agree that you need to find a pilates class that is fun. I would imagine that you would want to find someone who engages you because this would make the class more fun. My sister is looking for a pilates class so she’ll have to find one that is engaging.
