THE PILATES BARRE, PILATES CLASS

First Impressions:  The studio has a sleek, modern decor.  The staff is friendly and helpful.  Reservations are required ahead of time to hold your spot in the class.

The Workout:  Ryan was the instructor.  He was great at explaining the movements.  They specialize in the Lagree Fitness Method.  It combines classic Pilates with strength training.  The class is set to music.  Their playlist was great, and you can go to their website to view it.  During the class, we stayed on the Megaformer machine the entire time.  We also used a ball and a pilates circle.  The class focused primarily on legs and abs, which is a good thing!  I really hate doing abs when I am working out on my own, so they tend to get neglected.  I like to think that my legs are considerably strong, but I still felt I was getting a rigorous workout.  We did several sets of lunges and “arabesque” leg lifts upwards and to the side with resistance.  Killer.  We also did a series of upper body exercises.  I appreciated that Ryan offered modifications for those of us who needed them.  There were some exercises that we were supposed to do in plank position that I could not do, and so I went to my knees so I could complete the set.  The resistance level can also be adjusted to make the movements more or less difficult.

Final Thoughts:  When the class was over, I looked like I had just done hot yoga….sweaty!  I forgot to wear my heart rate monitor again!  Ugh, I wish I had because I know I kept a good heart rate for the entire class.  I didn’t feel out of breath, but was definitely fatigued and sweaty.  I enjoyed the workout and thought it was difficult.  I would love to go back and repeat this class with another instructor for variety, or try one of their bootcamp barre classes.
