Layer Up for the Outdoors

lulu-5While I do plenty of indoor workouts, I love to incorporate outdoor exercise this time of year.  It feels wonderful to get out, enjoy the brisk air, and clear my mind while I break a sweat!  As time passes in my wellness journey, its become obvious that this benefit of activity is among the most important for me.  Taking the time to care for myself through exercise helps me deal with everyday stress more gracefully, and it just makes me feel good!

There really is something about being in nature that calms the senses.  I tend to do my best thinking and reflecting during solo outdoor workouts.  Wearing gear that was made to brave the elements keeps me comfortable, allowing me to be in the moment and enjoy the movement.  Being active outside makes me feel thankful for my body and what it can do!

When I walk or run outdoors I like to take a few minutes to warm up with active movements (or include them at the end of the workout).  Squats, lunges, planks are all things I can do using my own body weight as resistance.  Lunges are great for activating muscles in the lower body.  Traveling lunges and lateral lunges are some of my favorites to incorporate…

When I’m exercising outside I’ll admit, I hate being cold!  Lightweight sweat-wicking layers are key during unpredictable fall/winter weather.  For many years, cold weather running gear from lululemon has been a wardrobe essential!  And to add more value, I often wear these layers under my ski clothing.  The fabric technology does double duty, keeping me warm and dry.

This fair isle print Rest Less Pullover was the first thing that caught my eye on a recent visit to my local store!  The sweater like print makes it a unique performance piece.  I paired it with running tights here, but I’d also wear it with cozy brushed Wunder Unders and chic snow boots apres ski.

These Fast and Free running tights are truly amazing!   This style is new this season, and I’m so glad I tried them.  They’re 7/8 length, which I love because they’re full length on me (I’m 5’2″) and I don’t have to get them hemmed.  (lululemon does offer free hemming, so that’s a huge plus when I do need alterations!)  They are made of Nulux fabric which is designed to have a “naked” feel on the skin, which it absolutely does!  They feel smooth and buttery, and lightly compressive.  Another great feature are the pockets on the sides of the pants and in the waistband, good for storing keys or cards while you exercise.  (Inspire Tights are at the top of my list for running as well.)

lulu-63The Run for Cold Vest is perfect to layer over this pullover.  Its sleek, yet warm and has stretchy side panels, allowing it to move with you.  You barely even notice you have it on!  It folds down really small too, in case you need to take it off when you heat up.  I practically live in my Free to Be sports bras, so I layered one under the pullover.  The Energy Bra is another nice option if you like strappy back details but need a little more support!

Oh no!! There do seem to be some mixed reviews but I think it depends on personal preference. I tend to go for more compressive running tights but I really loved the feel and fit of these ones. A nice change! And, the pullover is one of my favorite pieces this fall, a little thicker and less fitted through the body than a swiftly long sleeve that I usually wear for layering. Let me know if you have any specific fit questions…I’m happy to help! xx
